The Story of the Gap Year Internship

The origins of the GYI began in 2015 when one of our key workers felt prompted to go and live in Ethiopia for a period of 3 months.  At the time we provided a one month training as a one-off, not knowing that God was speaking to us to develop this.  Over  the subsequent four years, it became increasingly clear through the people that God drew to us (eg Katy Read) that this was a more long term initiative that we needed to develop.

Fast forward to the autumn of 2019, Femi Oni was approached by a 16 year old who wanted to draw on the experience of BTBAB to pursue a career in International Development.  Since that time a programme has been developed and initiated which is tailored to each individual who joins us.

Past & Present Interns

Our first BTBAB Intern was Tina Falvey from Ireland who went on a 1 year mission internship, successfully leading a team to Ethiopia in February 2020.  Upon completion of her internship in April 2020 she took on the role of Toolbox Co-ordinator, assisting in our Toolbox Training programme.

Our last intern was Naomi, a 17 year old from the local area, who finished her internship in December 2020.  She worked on a project about poverty in the developing world with a focus on the perception of poverty in teenagers.  She has now gone onto university to do international studies.

About the GYI

As a part of the Internship, you will have an opportunity to learn about the work of BTBAB and explore a project/initiative among the poor in the developing world.

You will be involved in regular teaching sessions.  As well as this, you will be expected to undertake day to day practical tasks in the BTBAB base and serve in the local community.

Some interns are local residents, in which case accommodation is not needed. However, if you are not local, we expect you to move into the BTBAB base where you will share a room with up to two other interns.

During the Internship you will be expected to go on a 2 week mission trip (for those who are on an Internship for more than 6 months, you will have the opportunity to go for up to 3 months).
