About Paraguay

Location

Paraguay borders Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina.  The population is approximately 8 million compared to 57 million in England, with a landmass 1.7 times larger.  The capital is Asuncion at the south of the country.

Rivers play an extremely important role in the economic life of Paraguay. Indeed, the name of the country is said to derive from the Guaraní word meaning “river that gives birth to the sea.” Rivers provide access to the Atlantic Ocean and serve as sites for the hydroelectric power plants that have made Paraguay one of the world’s largest exporters of hydropower. The country is also a major world producer of soybeans, and Paraguayans in parts of the fertile eastern border region have achieved relatively high standards of living based on modern diversified agricultural production.

Climate

The climate is subtropical in most of the Eastern Region. Masses of humid air blanket the country in the summers, and the winters are subject to cold southern winds. Summer temperatures, between October and March, generally range from 24 to 38 °C. Winter temperatures usually range from 16 to 24 °C.  Frost occurs frequently in the Eastern Region.

The heaviest rainfall is from October to April. The entire country is subject to periodic floods and droughts, both of which cause severe agricultural losses.

Language

As established in the 1992 constitution, Spanish and Guaraní are the official languages of Paraguay. Guaraní is spoken by nearly nine-tenths of the population, but it has only been taught in schools since 1996. Spanish is used almost exclusively in government and business. At least half of the population is bilingual. The constitution also recognizes other Indian languages as part of the country’s heritage.

Religion

About nine-tenths of the population professes adherence to Roman Catholicism. There is also a sizable minority of Evangelical Protestants – approximately 6% according to Operation World.  The constitution recognizes no official religion and emphasizes the state’s independence from the Roman Catholic Church.

ABOUT OUR HOSTS

We will be working with churches or missionaries in the country.  These opportunities will be presented to you during our training weekends.

General Information

Who is Eligible to Go

You must be:

  • A Christian
  • 16yrs or over
  • Active member of a local church
  • Able to pay for your own expenses
  • Able to provide a letter of reference from your pastor or a recognised Christian leader who has known you for at least 1 year

If you have met the first 4 conditions above, please send us a completed application form along with a £50 admin fee.  Once we have received these, we will apply for a character reference from your church minister or a Christian leader.

Please note that all money you start investing from the 1st training day is non-refundable (including flight fares).

Training

During your mission preparation, you will be required to attend two mandatory training weekends. Each training weekend includes prayer & worship; teaching/practical workshops & administration. These sessions are an extremely invaluable time of intimacy with God, and are crucial in working together as a team.

Conduct and Lifestyle

As we are a Christian organisation with Christian ethics, please note that we reserve the right to refuse your application or remove you from the team at any time if we feel your conduct of life does not meet the minimum required for a Christian (this includes any behaviour that puts the rest of the team at risk). An email and telephone number of a member of our Board of Trustees will be available to team members who require confidential support during their preparations for the trip.

Passport & Visas

Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months at the time of returning home.  UK citizens do not need a visa to travel to Paraguay, but those without a European or South American passport will need to apply for a visa.

Booking your Flight

Please DO NOT make any flight bookings until after the first training weekend and your team leader has approved them. However, you will be required to purchase your ticket in full 2 months before the trip at the latest.

Also due to instability across the world in recent years, we suggest booking flights with our travel agent.

Travel Insurance

It is essential that you obtain your own insurance: either a one-year insurance, or simply a return trip insurance.

Travel Health

Please check that your vaccinations are up to date prior to your trip abroad by contacting your GP surgery for more information or go to Travel vaccination advice – NHS

Terms & Conditions

Team Requirements

Finance

The cost of the mission is estimated at approximately £1750 per person (includes training, flight & living expenses (estimated). However, costs may vary depending on flight prices at the time of booking. You are welcome to pay in instalments anytime from 6months prior to your trip but you are at the least required to purchase your flight ticket prior to the 2nd training weekend. In addition, BTBAB requires payment for the training weekends prior to your arrival.

  • Admin fee £50 (non refundable with application form)
  • Training weekend approximately £135 x 2 (payment due 1 week before each of the dates)
  • Flights estimated £800 (depends on time of booking)
  • Living expenses £630 approx  (2 weeks before we leave)

As a member of the team you are responsible for this cost and any funds raised by the team prior to the trip will be in order to facilitate the work we do in the country and not our individual costs.

NB. Members of the team are not permitted to make independent travel arrangements and must travel as part of the Mission Group.

Due to rising flight costs we strongly recommend that you process your application as soon as possible…BUT please do not make any flight bookings until you have permission from your team leader to do so. We will receive applications up until the first official training weekend, as specified by the team leader).

We are a faith-based organisation (that means we are totally dependent on God for the finances for the work we do). As a result, we have very high standard of financial accountability for the funds God provides us. So, we would like to inform you in advance that all money you give or invest is entirely non-refundable (including flight fares).

Travel Insurance

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the necessary travel insurance for this trip. If you choose not to arrange travel insurance you will be responsible for any additional costs that you face as a result of this.
