In October 2008 a team of six individuals from around the UK went to Maputo, Mozambique to serve alongside Heidi Baker’s extraordinary ministry to orphans (known as Iris ministries). Mozambique is one of the world’s poorest countries but is recovering from a bitter civil war which has left the economy in tatters. There are signs that this is changing but as wealth comes into the country again there is an ever growing divide and inequality between those that have and those that have nothing.
During our time away we served in medical clinics, provided carpentry training, provided children’s ministry in various orphanage houses as well as the local dump and visiting the sick in the hospital. In addition, we received donations that meant we were able to put sandals on the feet of over 2,000 orphans! Praise God that seven people came to faith in Jesus during the trip.
This trip was our 4th to Mozambique where we yet again were humbled by the strength of faith that is present when material possessions are few and how close God can be when you sit with the poor, the widows and the orphans. In previous trips, our teams had witnessed healings, deliverance and a miraculous turn-around of a young boy who was closed to death and snatched back by the power of God through prayer. Oh what a glorious God we serve!
Mozambique is the first nation as an organization where, because we sent out teams over a period of 5 years, we witnessed firsthand how it really is possible for God to reverse poverty when Christians get involved. We are thankful to Iris Ministries for the privilege of being a small part of what God is doing in Mozambique.
