I have always been struck about the role of a gatekeeper, they guard a door, they keep people out who shouldn’t come into the city. The dictionary definition says, “an attendant employed to control who goes through a gate or a person or thing that controls access to something”. They look outward, they hold the keys that opens the doors. In the Old Testament we see lots of references to the gatekeepers who are protectors of the Temple. In Revelation 1:17-18 says: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades”. Jesus holds the keys to death and Hades, although I have read this passage numerous times, only in writing this did the penny drop that Jesus is a Gatekeeper.
In BTBAB we have been in a season of prayer and seeking God’s face. One of the challenges for us is to find those doors that are open to us and “gatekeepers” who can work in partnership with. Please join us as we pray out of Psalm 24 v 7-10:
Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
The Lord Almighty—
he is the King of glory.
