This summer marked my fourth consecutive year serving at Merseyside Christian Youth Camps (MCYC) on their site in Pwllheli, North Wales. From 25th July for one week, I had the privilege of working with the 18–21s group. Although several long‑standing leaders were unable to come this year, the new team gelled remarkably well—and we even had a record eight couples serving together! Many of the campers were also in relationships, with one couple newly engaged, which added a lovely dynamic to the week.

I had a fantastic time working with my fellow group leader, Sarah. After many years faithfully serving in the kitchen, she felt led to step into youth work this year. We made a great team—she brought boundless energy for all things sport, while I leaned into my experience leading small groups. It was a joy to serve alongside her.

Be Resolute — A Week in the Book of James

This year’s theme was “Be Resolute,” with the padres teaching from the book of James—never a shy or subtle book! It was wonderful to see the young adults engaging wholeheartedly in worship, teaching, and group discussions without any prompting. We also held dedicated boys’ and girls’ sessions where they could submit anonymous questions, creating space for honest conversation and discipleship.

A Sacred Moment at St Cybi’s Well

One of the highlights of the week was a visit arranged by Rob, one of the padres, to St Cybi’s Well—a holy site first inhabited in the 6th century by a monk. The waters were historically believed to hold healing properties, drawing visitors for generations. We took the whole camp, spent time praying for those who were unwell, and then the fittest among us climbed the hill beside the well. It was a meaningful and memorable moment for everyone.

Worship by Firelight

Near the end of the week, we gathered on the nearby beach for worship and preaching around a campfire as the sun set—a truly special evening. It turned out to be our final campfire of the year, as the Welsh government introduced a fire ban the next day due to the heatwave.

God’s Provision and Perfect Timing

I hadn’t expected to attend camp this year because of prior commitments that were later cancelled. Then, the week before camp, I had a flare‑up of my back condition. Yet when I arrived, several campers told me how pleased they were to see me, having noticed my name wasn’t on the staff list. Their encouragement meant so much. Praise God—He sustained me, enabled me to serve, and surrounded me with support. I’m especially grateful to Shirley, who faithfully carried my backpack up and down the stairs of my flat!
